japanese architect taku sakaushi / OFDA has sent us images of 'three corridors house',
a single-storey private residence in a quiet neighbourhood in japan. as requested byù
the eldest member of the three-generation family, the design is a modern interpretation of
the traditional japanese house and features multiple corridors that provide neutral living spaces
for a variety of functions.

the basic scheme that the design takes off from is a style of traditional japanese dwelling which
consists of a central corridor that divides the domestic programs according to ideal views and position.
this organization allowed for an efficient form of circulation that also provided a simple and
intuitive layout. drawing from this element, 'three corridors house' features a long spinal hallway
that connects the east and west ends of the rectangular plan. this space enables a natural flow to
the circulation as well as establish visual connections throughout the house. two slimmer corridors
flank the layout at the north and the south, double-functioning as verandas as well as providing
alternate routes for he inhabitants. intersecting all three corridors at the center of the design is
the communal area which accommodates the living and dining room.

a collection of services and private programs are generated from the negative spaces of the corridors,
such as the bathroom and the study room, as well as the kitchen module off of the central communal space.
despite the compact design, the pitched ceiling form harvests a more open sense of living space.
